Crossle Record

Page 293

[This page contains a Pedigree of Edward Beatty, drawn in a traditional fashion. Rather than try and reproduce the drawing, I have attempted to transcribe it—LTB]

Edward Beatty of Drumhalry, Co. Leitrim which he held by lease etc. married Barbara Dudgeon (will dated 7 Nov. 1701)
They had the following children: 1) Martin 2) John 3) Richard (? Trooper in Wolseley’s; horse in 1689,90, p. 26 4) Wm. (? Trooper in Wolseley’s; horse 1689/90, p.26) 5) Edward –could he be one of late Edward Betty & whom I found serving in King Wm’s army as a soldier 1689/90. 6) Mary [Crossle notes: something wrong about these page numbers. I cannot remember whence they shd be—PC, Oct. 1951]

There seems to be no doubt that the above Edward B. joined King William’s army, see covenant of his lease with Martin Armstrong (see page 132). probably lost his life in action late same time as M. A. i.e. March 1688/9. He might be the quarter master Betty in Capt. Goies troop in Wolsely’s horse (?) at p. 26.
It looks to me as if John Betty of Aghabane 1702 (see p. 66) & 17 (see p. ___) might be the father of Edward of Vohlen & might be identified with the same John one of the sons of Edward of Drumhalry. It is probable that John Betty’s wife (see p. ___) was ??? to the Drumhalry. I think, must be ?? Sam. (?) Drumhalry which I find as a subdenomination of the lands of the manor of Castle Craig.

Oct. 1, 1951. Despite a prolonged search I was not able to trace the parentage of Edward Beatty (died 1794—see chart facing p. 14) who m. 1740 Mary widow of Sterne Brock.
From the fact that Edwards two first born sons were respectively named John, one bapt. 1742/3 (must have died an infant) & the other bapt. in 1745, leads one to surmise that Edward’s father was named John Beatty.
That is to say that Edward Beatty probably was grandson of the above Edward Beatty of Drumhalry.
The family have a tradition there were 7 Beatty brothers who fought at the Battle of the Boyne—see Mrs. Lett’s letter from ?? p. 16. The Beatty family of Farranseer (p. 1) had same tradition.
Tradition whilst not always reliable as to details, yet often is founded upon some evidence which leads me to surmise the above remarks.
Philip Crossle.
